When the Magi (wise men from "the East", most likely Persia) visited the baby Jesus, they were following the common custom of presenting gifts to royalty, or one destined to be a ruling monarch.
"When they saw the star, they rejoiced with great delight. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh."
Matthew 2: 10-11

Happy Thanksgiving! Our Thanksgiving Day Tradition is to start the day off snuggled up under a quilt watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
